Westpac IT

Westpac set several key objectives for its new Information Technology premises - they had to support Westpac’s solid business values and visually relate more to the new branch network image. Layouts must be flexible, allowing easy change to project groupings.  They must break down organisational silos and make team leaders visible and accessible.  No offices for anyone. The whole layout must be open and accessible, encourage staff movement and collaboration. Environmental conditions must be superior and sustainability objectives met.  The premises must improve staff retention and attract the best calibre of new staff.

Level 1 contains fixed support facilities, reception, conference rooms, café and computer labs as well as teams of support staff.  Upper floors contain project teams who frequently regroup for new projects. The upper floors are provided with a wide variety of meeting opportunities for collaborative work.

This informed the aesthetic approach.  Level 1 presents a strong Westpac brand.  From reception, visitors can see directly into the upmarket staff café – a novel idea to put the staff on “show”. Robust timber posts offer limited screening to the café but their presence is more about strength and solidity than privacy. Computer test labs are also visible from reception, helping demystify what IT is and does. These labs can be seen through a funky ‘scaffold tube’ lattice, representing the fluid dynamic of computer testing.

Higher floors L5, 6, 7 and 8 are closed to the public. Each follows much the same layout, but with varying aesthetic character depending on who works there. L5 contains stable groupings of support staff so is represented by the word “Robust”.  Way finding at the lift lobby, screening between desk clusters and informal meeting areas utilise robust materials (woodtex and aluminium plate for example).  Furniture choices further support this image. L6, L7 and L8 contain project teams who need flexibility to form and reform groupings.  Their wide internal circulatory street contains a whole variety of materials, colours and furniture, which express the fluidity, resilience, and nimbleness of these teams.  These floors are branded ‘Responsive’, ‘Flexible’ and ‘Accessible’.
